Conditions at work for clerical workers during COVID-19

Wednesday 01 Apr 2020

There are many changes occurring in response to the COVID-19 crisis and we are all urgently adapting the way we live and work.

Employers and your union – the Australian Services Union – have been negotiating the best way to keep organisations and businesses viable while also protecting as many jobs as possible. We have taken an extremely flexible approach with these negotiations recognising the unique situation and our members’ priority to protect their jobs.

A number of fact sheets and information, including information about the changes to the Clerks Award is available on the members-only section of our website.

In response to the Government’s mandate of isolation and social distancing, many people are currently or planning on working from home.

A large number of ASU Enterprise Agreements already include working from home provisions, and the following changes will not affect any members working under an EBA.

However for those people who do not have an EBA and work under the Clerks - Private Sector Award 2010, there are some temporary changes to the Award that will provide more flexibility around work hours, range of duties, and leave access.  These changes will only operate until 30 June 2020. These changes will allow people to juggle work and home commitments with greater flexibility, and to assist employers and employees to adapt to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We know that people are thinking seriously about their skills and future, and the ASU is committed to supporting members through this trying time.

As always, ASU members have access to the full program of professional development modules through the ASU Career Launchpad. These can be accessed by members anytime at: www.asucareerlaunchpad.tln.org.au

If you are at home or in isolation, the ASU Career Launchpad is an excellent way for you to learn new skills, catch-up on courses, and help you get a step ahead at work.

We have decided that for a very limited time only, workers whose employer applies to reduce their work hours under the Award will be able to sign-up for one free course of the ASU Career Launchpad professional development program.

If you know any family or friends who may be affected by these changes – please send this information onto them so they can be kept up-to-date.  We also have a more detailed fact sheet available – please get in touch if you would like this to send on.

We recognise this is a tough time for you and your family.  We are by your side every step of the way.

If you have any concerns with your workplace or need support, please talk to your union organiser or contact the Member Services Centre.
