Journey Cover - Your Trip to and From Work Covered!
The Australian Services Union (ASU) provides an income protection scheme for all members of the ASU for journey injuries that are not claimable under WorkCover or Transport Accident Legislation.
WHEN IS COVER PROVIDED?
Cover is provided for travel on a direct route by an insured member for the purposes of his or her employment with the insured member’s employer.
This includes cover for meal breaks, travel to places of education or assessment on behalf of your employer.
Direct route means travel between an insured member’s place of residence and his or her place of employment and shall include any minor deviations or interruptions which in no way increase the risk of injury that would have normally arisen had the insured person travelled directly.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The Insurance policy provides for the reimbursement of lost wages as a result of a covered injury (up to the maximum of $2,000 per week). Therefore it is necessary for you to prove that you have been off work (i.e. via a medical certificate) for a specified period of time so that the Insurer can reimburse your lost wages. This will mean that there will be some delay in receiving your wage cheque from the Insurer.
You can claim your sick leave entitlements during this time from your employer, if you so choose, but it may not possible to reimburse your employer once the claim has been accepted. Therefore you must choose early on whether you wish to claim your sick leave entitlements and the journey claim reimbursement OR go on sick leave without pay and just claim the journey claim reimbursement. In addition you cannot claim journey cover if you can also access Workers Compensation.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
If you are a member of the ASU, your union subscriptions cover the cost.
IF I JOIN THE ASU, AM I AUTOMATICALLY COVERED?
YES! From the date you join, as long as you have paid your union subscriptions.
ARE MEDICAL EXPENSE COVERED?
The journey cover insurance policy only provides cover for lost wages; it does not provide a reimbursement for medical expenses. They majority of medical expenses will be covered by medicare and/or private health insurance or a third party insurance if you have sustained your injuries via a motor vehicle accident.
The insurer will not be liable for any claim under this Policy caused by or arising out of:
The above list is not a full list of exclusions - for a full list of the exclusions please contact the Member Services Centre.
