May_Day_2009

We would like to thank the many ASU members who came along, with their family and friends, to our May Day Festival and March on Sunday, 3rd May.

Several thousand people enjoyed the carnival atmosphere of the day, which included a march through the Fremantle city centre, free food and entertainment and face painting and rides for children.

This year's theme was ‘Unity for Job Security' which is particularly relevant in these difficult economic times. Paul Parker, a union delegate from Harvey Meats, spoke about how he had lost his job after 22 years and UnionsWA Secretary; David Robinson warned that workers could expect tough times as the economic crisis worsens.

ASU members highlighted two of our important campaigns - for a new collective union agreement at Western Power and to improve funding for community service organisations.

Thanks to everyone who came along and helped to make the day a success. And if you missed out on all the fun this year - don't worry, you can join in next year. The May Day Festival is held every year on the first Sunday in May at the Fremantle Esplanade.
